Château Couloumey

Couloumeille

Meaning dovecote in the Gascon dialect, it has the ring of an affirmation of a region, of the past.

IN THE PAST

Rooted in the Graves region with a history that has spanned the centuries, Couloumey stands in the heart of the vineyards on the historic road from Bordeaux to the old port of Beautiran.

In the 17th century, the Dukes of Epernon are said to have welcomed the Kings of France Louis XIII and Louis XIV to Couloumey, at a time when it was only a hunting lodge.

A neo-classical chartreuse was built on the 17th century remains in 1770 by a family of Dutch merchants, the Van den Brandens. They constructed a group of large agricultural buildings on a 69-hectare plot around the mansion.

Le Tuquet and the Couloumey were then united in their operation and it was after this period, at the end of the 18th century, that they were separated, before being reunited today by the Journels.

There was a succession of notable owners, including Bordeaux shipowners and merchants. They shared a passion for the vine and for this living and fertile countryside.

Sold at auction and then to the Hospices de Bordeaux, great families have marked the history of the château for 300 years.

In 2022, Delphine and Guillaume Journel took up residence at Château Couloumey, making a reality of their dream of a life in wine in the Bordeaux region.

TODAY

Its buildings, outbuildings, park and vineyards, today covering around 10 hectares, are typical of an estate in the Bordeaux region.

Like a painting by Courbet or Corot, deer and herons populate the grounds at Couloumey, while two tributaries of the Garonne flow nearby.

Wild and luxuriant nature are the ideal setting for growth of the vine, with animal biodiversity and a great variety of plant species present everywhere.

The wines

A unique terroir of 3 hectares produces two enchanting wines, a red and white AOC Graves.

Like the neighbouring Grands Crus of Pessac-Léognan, the soil is composed of deep gravel, giving the white wine the typical aromas of the Left Bank, a smoky note that combines with the oak to give rich and incomparably complex wines.

Small-scale exclusive production, sustainable farming, mechanical tillage, and ageing in barrels and amphoras.

The traditional red grape varieties, Merlot and Cabernet Sauvignon, rich in tannins, find their expression and character in the new style sought by the owners.

An elegant wine, with red fruit on the nose combined with spicy and complex notes that give immediate pleasure on tasting.

Red wine available end of 2023

Historic Monument

The beautiful house at Château Couloumey has been listed on the Supplementary Inventory of Historic Monuments since 2002 for its architectural features, which make it a fine example of an 18th-century wine estate.

The large walled courtyard houses a 16th-century octagonal dovecote, listed in the “Pigeonniers de France”.

To showcase this historic and characterful house, the owners open its doors to visitors for 40 days each summer.
